on growing up, and being old, and birthdays
(it is not my birthday. that title sounds birthday-ish, but is misleading)
today my best friend’s baby brother turns 21. he is all grown-up and dating a girl and at college and now he can drink and oh dear lord i am old now.
my friends’ siblings, you see, are stuck at certain ages in my mind. this boy is permanently 3 years old to me, and a royal pain. he bit me! twice! punk. granted, he was 3 or 4 at the time, but he definitely bit me. and was irritating, and we tormented him, i’m pretty sure we did, and then one day, poof, he was old enough to torment us back, or to be kinda…acceptable, and now i look forward to seeing him because he is all grown-up and a good kid. and it makes me feel old.
other things making me feel officially Not in Touch with the young’uns? silly bandz. what. the. frick. i will give you the answer i got when i asked a cousin about them: “they’re rubber bands that look like things”. THAT IS NO REASON TO THINK THEY ARE COOL. i just don’t get it. and so silly bandz will forever be my mental marker for whether or not someone is in my (cultural) generation.
finally, i’m going to a graduate school open house today. free coffee, free lunch, and they’ll hopefully illuminate a few more points about the program that i have not hashed out on my own.
